Synthetic Chemist II – Surface Technology

Molecular Assemblies is a San Diego-based company developing a revolutionary, enzymatic DNAsynthesis technology capable of powering new products in industrial synthetic biology, personalized therapeutics, precision diagnostics, and eventually information storage, nanotechnology and more.

Molecular Assemblies is seeking a motivated full-time synthetic chemist to join our team.


  • Bioconjugation of oligonucleotides to solid support surfaces such as beads, polymeric chips and related materials
  • Design, synthesize, and characterize linker molecules for anchoring oligonucleotides to surfaces
  • Troubleshoot and optimize reaction conditions
  • Support in-house supply of modified solid surfaces for research and production 
  • Present data and reports; discuss results at individual and team meetings
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of experimental procedures and analytical results

Required Experience & Skills:

  • Experience in material science and conjugation of organic substances to solid materials
  • Experience in multi-step synthesis design, execution, and optimization
  • Demonstrated ability to access scientific literature to solve novel synthetic problems
  • Working knowledge of standard analytical and preparative techniques in synthesis and purification (NMR, LCMS, HPLC, FPLC, TLC and flash chromatography)
  • Ability to interact effectively and directly within a multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic startup environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Desired Experience & Skills: 

  • Nucleoside and nucleotide synthesis experience is a plus

Educational Level, Educational Disciplines:

  • Ph.D. in Material Science or Chemistry with 5 plus years of experience
