Senior Staff Engineer – Software Lead

Molecular Assemblies is a San Diego-based company developing a revolutionary, enzymatic DNA synthesis technology capable of powering new products in industrial synthetic biology, personalized therapeutics, precision diagnostics, and eventually information storage, nanotechnology and more.

The Senior or Staff Software Engineer will be a crucial contributor to the design and development of essential functions and software architecture of the Molecular Assemblies’ core oligo synthesis technology. The role will require a hands-on software approach to developing both architecture and primary user interface to system platform. This role will require working as part of an interdisciplinary team of scientist and engineers. This member should be familiar with standard lab practices, workflows, and have great attention to detail while enjoying communicating and working in fast paced environment.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Lead front line software design and development of a unique oligo synthesis platform responsible for all hardware integration and testing to support internal R&D and cross-functional development teams
  • Ownership of SW requirements, goals and milestones while working technical team to maintain alignment
  • Work closely with internal teams to identify to develop and maintain SW tools for R&D to ensure robust and reliable testing outputs, instrumentation, and user interfaces
  • This role will have ownership of the platform architecture and require familiarity with various assay process steps and hardware interfaces to achieve synthesis
  • Organize and plan out activities for self or development team to execute to meet individual, team, and company goals
  • Drive and execute platform, instrument, and subsystem software reliability tests
  • Contribute to overall integration of platform’s mechanical, electrical, motion, fluidic and thermal designs and development plans based on software/hardware interfaces and requirements
  • Collaborate with partners, internal or external, on platform and/or subsystem designs and transfer to manufacture

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Product development of SW packages for life science and understanding of basic laboratory workflows
  • Experience working on SW packages throughout their product life cycles, including user interfaces with real-time instrument controls and interfacing with manufacturing execution systems (MESs)
  • Demonstratable work experience of menu driven user interfaces involving laboratory instrument workflow or similar:  loading/unloading consumables, reading in job specific text files, manufacturing traceability, transfer and dispensing of fluids, etc.
  • Hardware/software integration experience involving programming and scripting in C++ or C, MATLAB, Python, R, or other comparable language
  • Familiarity with algorithms for quantifying data quality and signal processing as well as primary analysis of raw data and secondary analysis of outputs
  • Familiarity with firmware development to control complex operations in highly integrated systems
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks with different priorities
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment and adjust to rapidly evolving technology

  • Minimum BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years related work experience in a similar field required
  • Minimum 3 years working in life science company
  • History of working in multidisciplinary field including biochemistry, biology, optics, mechanics, fluidics, electrical, and software
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory practices, workflows, and GMP
