Principal Mechanical Engineer – Platform Development

Molecular Assemblies is a San Diego-based company developing a revolutionary, enzymatic DNA synthesis technology capable of powering new products in industrial synthetic biology, personalized therapeutics, precision diagnostics, and eventually information storage, nanotechnology and more.

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer that will be in a central role of developing instrumentation and consumables for the large-scale automation of enzymatic oligo synthesis. This engineer will be responsible for the architecture and design of equipment that includes complex fluidics, thermal, and motion subsystems. This engineer is required to coordinate with cross functional teams both internally with Molecular Assemblies and externally with key vendors and development partners.


  • Define product requirements and subsystem specifications for fluidics-based instrumentation
  • Lead and support the design and integration of fluidic components, motion systems, thermal modules
  • Lead and support the design of custom consumables
  • Perform hands-on design and build of breadboard systems and reliability test stations
  • Manage outsource design partnerships and key technology vendors
  • Utilize analysis methods such as FEA, CFD, and/or tolerance analyses to guide designs
  • Define and support design verification testing at the system and subsystem level


  • Proven track record of designing reliable electro-mechanical and thermal systems, throughout the product development life cycle (from concept to product launch to sustaining support)
  • Experience with designs for fluidically driven systems, preferably for microfluidic applications in life science or molecular diagnostic fields
  • Experience with designing or supporting custom consumables and their associated registration mechanisms
  • Proven track record with design for manufacturability, with understanding of a variety of manufacturing processes
  • Must be fluent in SolidWorks CAD, with experience in FEA is a plus
  • Must have strong collaboration skills, and experience working with vendors and/or outsource design partners
  • Experience with manufacturing systems and workflows is a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills


  • BS, MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • 10+ years of industry experience within product development or new product introduction organizations
